Mutual Aid for the Formerly Incarcerated in Michigan
Financial Solidarity and Support for Formerly Incarcerated People and Criminal Legal System-Impacted Communities Experiencing COVID-19 Hardship
“Bound But Free,” Lessie Brown, 2007, mixed media
The Prison Creative Arts Project, more commonly known as PCAP, is an organization at the University of Michigan that brings those impacted by the justice system and the University of Michigan community into artistic collaboration for mutual learning and growth. This Mutual Aid Project was created by University of Michigan students in PCAP to offer a simple way for people in Michigan to support each other during the COVID-19 crisis. We hope that this project will provide material support to those who have been incarcerated, their families, and criminal legal system-impacted people and communities who now have been impacted by COVID-19 and are in need of financial support.
Are you directly-impacted by incarceration and enduring financial hardship during this crisis?
If you are financially secure and want to support someone whose livelihood has been impacted by this crisis, please donate.
Are you looking for non-financial ways to support formerly incarcerated people?
We hope to be able to offer financial aid up to $250 USD. We will distribute funds on a first-come-first-serve basis. Keep in mind, we are not sure how many donations we will have or how many people will request aid. Until further notice, there is a set monetary fulfillment cap of $250 dollars per person. In order to help as many people as possible, please request the smallest amount that would reasonably help you. As a creative arts organization, we welcome requests from artists, creators, and their families who need support for their artistic practice during this crisis.
Mutual aid means working to meet one another’s needs in helpful and supportive ways.
